In a thrilling qualifying session at the Shanghai International Circuit, McLaren's Lando Norris pulled off a stunning upset, eclipsing seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton to secure pole position for Saturday's Formula 1 sprint at the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix.
The damp and unpredictable conditions played a crucial role, with Norris navigating the tricky track with remarkable composure. Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso also impressed, qualifying third ahead of championship contender Max Verstappen.
The qualifying session, consisting of three distinct segments, served as an exhilarating prelude to Saturday's sprint race. Norris emerged triumphant from the final segment, setting a blistering lap time of 1:32.746, just 0.044 seconds ahead of Hamilton.
Hamilton, despite his disappointment, will start alongside Norris on the front row. Alonso's impressive performance will give Alpine hope for a strong showing in the sprint race. Verstappen, on the other hand, will be seeking redemption after qualifying a disappointing fourth.
